'Best of Brass' - Hitchin Band qualify for finals of National Brass Band Championships 2012
Hitchin Band will be competing in the finals of this year's National Brass Band Championships, to be held in Cheltenham in September. At the London and Southern Counties regional qualifying contests, held at Stevenage's Gordon Craig theatre on March 17th we beat fourteen other bands in the 3rd Section to bring home the Regional Challenge Shield and a prize of £200. Runners up were Epping Forest.
When Hitchin members arrived at the contest they found they had been drawn 13th in the playing order - 'But this time 13 was not so unlucky!' said adjudicator Kevin Wadsworth, awarding us first place. He had high praise for the band's performance of 'Olympus' - Philip Harper's new work in three movements which had been commissioned specially for the regional championships in Britain's Olympic Year.
'Their performance was head and shoulders above the other bands and Hitchin deserve to be champions', said Mr Wadsworth, who also singled out our Musical Director, Craig Patterson for special praise. The last time Hitchin Band won the shield was in 1965.

Hitchin Band president Richard Whitmore added his congratulations to the band
"Hearty congratulations to Craig and everyone who played in the competition - I'm very proud of you all."
