Hitchin Band appoints Graham Chambers as Musical Director
Hitchin Band is delighted to start their 150th anniversary year by welcoming their new Musical Director, Graham Chambers.
Graham Chambers, Hitchin Band Musical Director, Jan 2016
Graham grew up playing the trombone in a village brass band in Oxfordshire where he realized a lifelong passion for brass bands.
He soon joined The Morris Motors Brass Band during the time that the legendary Harry Mortimer was Musical Director and subsequently the National Youth
Orchestra of Great Britain where he was principal trombone for three years, also The Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra.
After graduating with a Music Degree from Surrey University he worked for a short while as a trombonist also as a brass teacher
at The Redbridge Music School. After that he worked at The BBC as a music editor for Radio 3 then as a researcher in TV Music and Arts.
His conducting career started with The University Wind Band but his passion for brass bands led him to his first conducting appointment at the
age of 23 and he has subsequently been Musical Director of several bands in the London area.
From 1990 he took a job as librarian and music editor with The London Symphony Orchestra where he travelled the World on foreign tours
and was privileged to work closely with some of the World's greatest conductors and soloists, as well as preparing the orchestral parts for the LSO's wide
performing activity. As well as orchestral concerts this included a wide variety of film recording sessions e.g. the Star Wars movies in addition to many
other movies, and a wide variety of other commercial recording sessions.
Now as Musical Director of The Hitchin Band he is looking forward to the bands 150th anniversary year and hopes he can help to make this
the most exciting year ever for the band.
