22 March 2015 First Section Debut London & Southern Counties Region of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain
Hitchin Band are delighted with the results of their performance on Sunday at the London & Southern Counties Regional Brass Band Competition held at the Gordon Craig Theatre. Over 80 bands took part at the weekend, graded into five sections. Hitchin were placed 11th in the First Section which means that we stay up in that section for a second year, having only recently been promoted twice through Third and Second sections over the last three years. Our set piece, A London Overture, featured solos from many of the bandís players coupled with fine ensemble work featuring lyrical as well as energetic passages. The result is the culmination of weeks of preparation under the guidance of our Musical Director, Craig Patterson.

We are really pleased with this result as the last time the band qualified to play at this level was nearly twenty years ago. Having worked really hard to secure promotions, we have justified retaining our position in the First Section by managing to beat off some stiff competition from a number of bands that were recently competing in the Championship Section. The really important point is the quality of music we are able to play, which is down to the hard work of the band members and our conductor, Craig. We have a lot to look forward to as we continue to progress.

With a busy spring and summer schedule ahead, there are lots of opportunities for you to listen to the band in and around Hitchin, with details on our Engagements page. You can also follow us on our new Facebook page to keep up to date with news as it happens. www.facebook.com/hitchinband.co.uk

To celebrate the band's return to the First Section, we are delighted to be taking part in the Hitchin Festival this year with a concert on Saturday 18th July at St Mary's Church, to be compered by our President, Mr Richard Whitmore. The programme will feature the beautiful and much loved piece of music by Eric Ball entitled "Resurgam", meaning "I shall rise again", which is a fitting choice to mark the band's progress over recent years.
